Common blocks to healing

What got us sick won’t get us well. It’s recognizing the dysfunction of what’s not working for us anymore that can get us out.

Most people use the same energy or strategy that got them sick, to heal themselves. Pushing too hard, being perfectionistic, all or nothing thinking, repressing emotions, ignoring reality and impatience are just some examples of dysfunctional patterns that can lead to chronic stress, nervous system imbalance and a major health crash.

This is the stuff that no one wants to deal with because it’s hard. It’s emotional. It’s painful to see and scary to change. This pattern was developed early on to help you survive and even if you want to make a big change, you may get a bit of push back from your subconscious mind.

Subconscious blocks

The subconscious mind automates your reactions to life, and how you view the world. Its number one priority is to protect you. It has developed strategies to keep you safe and alive, even if it sacrifices your happiness.

I see the subconscious as an overprotective parent stuck in the past. They want the best for you but are operating from an outdated paradigm, that no longer serves you or holds true.

Our subconscious life strategies are formed by the age of 8, so it makes sense that what worked for us at 6 years old, won’t work at 36 or 66 years old. Yet, if not examine and rewired we continue to live life from our early childhood programming.

Whenever we can’t do what we set out to do, self sabotage, hit massive resistance, get busy/distracted or procrastinate when we want to make important changes, the subconscious is behind it all.

It’s important to first understand how your mind is wired and why it’s hard to do hard things.

My clients always tell me “I will do anything to heal” except for the things that their subconscious mind objects to.

It’s not because you are lazy or weak or lack will power. It’s because you are up against something very powerful and mostly invisible to you, until you make the subconscious conscious.

You see the subconscious program, you understand why you created it and you decide to replace it with something that will serve you better in your life right now. You spend time persuading your subconscious mind, through repetition that your new strategy is better and more protective. That this particular change is safe and you are ready for it.

I help clients do this with hypnosis. When you slow your brainwaves down to a meditative state you are better able to connect to your subconscious mind and certain information and emotions are available to you.

Here are the top subconscious blocks that I see my clients struggling with and that keeps them stuck and prevents true, deep and successful healing. They get stuck in a cycle of stress, and doubt and confusion and simply can’t move forward, not matter how much they want to.

This is the human condition. It is very normal and the remedy to overcoming it is seeing it as it is. An old program from childhood that is present in your life today.

Common subconscious programs that keep people stuck

Being all or nothing about your healing. You are either 150 percent committed and dedicated to your healing process, diet and self care or you are completely rebelling against it. If you can’t do it perfectly you do whatever you please. I know I am guilty of this one.

Wanting to do everything perfectly may seem like a good idea but it often creates a lack of safety and lots of stress and pressure around healing. The subconscious belief is it won’t work unless you are perfect. It couldn’t be father from the truth but it often creates a self fulfilling prophesy. It is not lack of perfection that interfere’s the the stress and contraction around doing it perfectly.

Not believing your body is capable of healing is one of the biggest ones I see. Your body looks to your subconscious mind to know what to do. If the belief that healing is not possible the body will comply. It doesn’t know any better, it just looks to the subconscious mind for guidance. If you have found yourself saying “I’ve done everything but nothing works” or “my body feels like its broken” or “I have been sick for so long, will I live like this forever?”, you may have subconscious blocks around healing.

This may be hard to hear, but for some people, being sick is serving them. If they are afraid of failing at something in the outside world (work, dating, not being accepted for a flaw) then it’s convenient to have a physical excuse to stay howe and safe. This is a really tough one to accept, that you may be doing this to yourself subconsciously, but also one that can be surfaced and fixed.

Being is a rush, being impatient and pushing your body to heal in an unrealistic time frame is extremely common and born from anxiety. Being someone who pushes too hard in life can do a number on the adrenals which can bring the gut down with it as it struggles. Healing is a slow process unfortunately and needs to be done slow because the body does not do well with quick changes. Slow is always the way to go. But you need to have faith that you will get there to stop pushing. Not easy. But gets easier with awareness.

Looking for a magic pill or thinking someone outside yourself can heal you. This is probably the most common one I see. And our culture supports it. If you only purchased the right supplement, did the right cleanse or ate the right foods, you will recover. Yes, diet and supplements can be very supportive but they are not the whole answer. Your stress levels, nervous system, daily habits have a large impact. You can’t supplement yourself out of any of these subconscious pitfalls. You can’t buy health. So don’t let people sell you the magic pill and don’t give your healing responsibility away. You have everything inside yourself that you need to heal and only your body can do the healing work. And it heals much better and faster when you identify and remove the subconscious blocks.

Another common one is jumping from protocol to protocol and panicking when nothing works. Thinking the whole answer lies in a bottle is why most people go around in circles. Taking a deeper look at what’s not working in your life and habits will set you on the right path. Introspections is really not valued in our society because no one can make any money from it.

Lack of consistency or not sticking to a diet or protocol is likely driven by a subconscious belief around deprivation or self worth or something much more personal to you. But it can also be fixed by finding and rewiring the belief that keeps you stuck.

Unwillingness to be uncomfortable is not so much a subconscious belief but just a human tendency to shy away from discomfort. What is familiar is comfortable and safe. Discomfort usually involves going into unknown territory or challenging the safety of your subconscious programming. Know that your comfort is a bit of cage and you can unlock it by getting curious about what and why you are so uncomfortable. This is not easy and you will resist it like crazy. But curiosity holds the key.

Not wanting to be different, not fit in or rock the boat. Most people have not having what everyone else is eating or drinking. They don’t want to stand out because it’s too uncomfortable otherwise. This makes social connection and keeping a healing diet difficult. This is not one I suffer from but I am an exception.

Vanity is another version of this. People don’t want to do anything that will make them look bad (cut or not color hair, gain or lose weight, go through detox that makes them break out)

Lastly, overwhelm with conflicting info, over researching and all the healing options can stop paralyze. It’s hard know the right way to move forward so you stay put. And stuck.

I could go continue, but the point is that there are many subconscious blocks to healing. They may not seem logical or in your control.

We’re set up to operate on autopilot to make life easier, until it’s not so easy and then we feel helpless to change it.

But we can change. Talk therapy may not get to root of subconscious programming or get there very, very slowly. But working with the body and subconscious mind through hypnosis or other subconscious or somatic therapies will get you there.

What resonates from the subconscious blocks above? What is your biggest block to healing?

You can connect your conscious intention with your subconscious desire to be safe to create a new map for supporting your way forward instead of hitting subconscious walls or taking one step forward and a few step back.

The first step is just to notice where you get stuck.
